Chapter Nine

There was only one reason why I was in this car. It was because my best friend had taken to calling me names.

“Vannie, you look like a vampire!”

That’s what she said to me right after we’d had that laugh about talking dirty to Sheldon and she finally told me that she’d only asked him to get well soon.

“A vampire? Really? Gee…thanks.”

“I’m just keeping it one-hundred, Chica. So, you ready to break out of here and go home?”

“No, I’m good. I don’t want to leave.”

“Wait! What?” She looked like I was the one now speaking Spanish. “Didn’t you just call me and ask me to come here so that you could go home?”

I’d already forgotten about that call. Mostly, I’d called Theresa as a kind of passive-aggressive move to handle Ginger. “Yeah, but I’m good now.”

“No. You’re not,” Theresa said, folding her arms.

“I agree with Aunt Resa,” Kym said. “It really helped me when I went home last night. And you sent us home so that we could do this in shifts, right? So it’s your turn to rest.”

“But really, I’m good.”

Kym and Theresa exchanged a glance and then the two of them pressed their lips together and folded their arms. It looked like Kym had a new twin.

“What?” I asked.

“You. Look,” Theresa started.

“A. Hot. Mess,” Kym finished as if the two had rehearsed that.

Then, Theresa just had to drive home the insults some more with, “You’ve got to go home because you cannot be telling people that you’re my girl, looking like a vampire.”

“Would you stop with the name-calling? I don’t want to leave Sheldon alone. Suppose he wakes up? Plus, you know me. If I go home I’m not going to rest anyway.”

“Fine. Then, you can come right back. But at least you won’t be a smelly vampire anymore.”

“Really, Theresa,” I said, not feeling her jokes. Especially since I wasn’t sure she was kidding since her lips didn’t turn into any kind of a smile while she teased me.

“And I don’t get what you mean about you don’t want to leave Daddy alone,” Kym said, jumping in. “What’s wrong with me?”

Now, she was upset?

My daughter said, “Daddy won’t be alone if I’m here, Mother. I’ll stay until you get back.” She turned to Theresa and told her, “You go with her,” as if she were in charge. “At least you can make her lay down for a little while since you said she looks like a zombie.”

Theresa raised her eyebrows. “I didn’t say zombie, I said vampire. If you are going to be my doctor, you are going to have to pay attention to details.”

“Well okay, but if you are going to say she looks like something, then you need to know the difference between a vampire and a zombie. She looks like a zombie.”

Then, they both stared at me with straight faces.

“Really?” I said, kind of pissed.

A couple of seconds ticked by and then the both of them burst out laughing. Clearly, I didn’t find any of this funny.
